The alto saxophone is a middle woodwind instrument, that is one of nine different types of saxophones. It is medium sized and the second highest pitched of all the saxophones. The alto saxophone is the most common saxophone played. The alto saxophone is also in the key of E flat. Though most altos come in a curved, backwards-J shape, some come in a straight shape as well. Alto saxophones are very common in jazz, symphonic, concert, and marching bands, and it played a huge role in the jazz era.
